January Stamp of the Month Blog Hop and Blog Candy!

Welcome to the Close To My Heart Stamp of the Month Blog Hop for January!

All artwork on the hop will feature January's SOTM, "True Friends"  a set of 11 stamps! If you have come here from {Maricar's blog} you are on the right path!  Click the link at the end of my post to hop to the next blog.  If you hop through them all, you'll see over 60 examples of great SOTM artwork!

Here's a look at some art that CTMH made with the SOTM "True Friends".   This artwork is also featured in our NEW Spring 2010 Idea Book - which you can view here: (link will go live at 8 am, Jan 1st)

As an added bonus this month, I'll be randomly selecting one person to win BOTH of my blog hop cards!  To be entered, just post a comment below.  Receive a second entry if you sign up to be a follower of my blog!  I'll draw a winner and post their name at 8 am, Jan 2.

This month my cards all feature the same basic products (besides the SOTM).  They are the *new* Veranda Paper Pack, Waterbrush, Cocoa and Tulip Inks, Brown Stayz On Ink, Sponge Daubers,  Antique Copper Mini Medleys, Filigree Charms and Just Bloom Spring Blossom Flowers.

Card 1: Size - 4.25" x 5.5".  For this card I used the waterbrush and tulip ink to lightly spread color on the tips of the new Just Bloom flowers.  I also used sponge daubers and brown Stayz On to turn the pewter colored Filigree Charm an antique copper color.  To get the look of a double mat on the frame, stamp it in cocoa ink on the patterned paper.  Then cut it out right on the brown line.  Glue it to colonial white paper, and cut around it leaving 1/8" border.

Card 2: Size 4.25" x 5.5".  All of the papers on this card were roughed up (distressed) using the scissor technique.  Take your microtip scissors and leaving the blades closed, rub them against the edges of your paper.  This is safer than opening the scissors and it produces the same look!  The Filigree charms were "antiqued" again with Stayz On as with the first card.  I also stamped the flowers from the new stamp set "So Sweet" in Stayz On so that I could use the waterbrush to watercolor the leaves and blossoms.  I picked the ink up from the lid of the ink pad after giving the pad a gentle squeeze..  This gives a very soft look.  For more vivid color use a drop of reinker in the lid of your stamp pad.  The corner element is from the Antique Copper mini medley pack.

I hope you enjoyed my cards!  Don't forget to post a comment.  One lucky poster will win both cards!!!

Now hop on over to {Laurie's blog}!  She is sure to inspire you with her incredible artwork!

Nona's January Knit-Along!

It's almost a new year, and I can't wait to reveal my NEW class!  You asked for it, you got it!  I'm now hosting a monthly knitting class in addition to my card and scrapbook classes!  :)

Here is a photo of January's Knit A-long project.  A diagonal rib scarf made with chunky alpaca yarn.  It is warm and soft, and quick to knit up!

I hope that local folks will want to come.  For those long distance, feel free to email me (nonapearl@firebin.net) about joining in the Knit-Along long distance.  The patterns we will use will vary in difficulty, but for at least the first few months will stay in the beginners/intermediate range until I get a better feel for the interest and skill level of participants.

To purchase this pattern, go to my etsy store!

Quick Christmas Tags

I'll take a break from Studio J for the day, and share a quick Christmas Tag idea with you.  These little gift tags are adorning all of our packages this year.  They are super fast to make, and very cute!

I used a 2 3/4 circle punch and the Holiday Trinkets stamp set, and several different combinations of inks for ornaments.  You could write who the gifts are for on the front, or on the back.  Here are some ideas for ink colors you could use.  Stamp the ornament in the lighter color, and the design in the darker color.

Crystal Blue/Moonstruck
Blush/Tulip (or Cranberry)
Creme Brulee/Goldrush
Sweet Leaf/Topiary
I used Grey Wool for the ornament bow/wire

Or use a first and second generation inking technique and get the same look using just one ink pad.  To do this, ink your ornament solid stamp in the desired color.  Stamp off once on scratch paper, and then immediately stamp again on your project paper (this is called second generation).  Ink the decoration in the same color and stamp without stamping on to scratch paper (this is first generation).  This technique works best with colors that are dark, such as Hollyhock, Cranberry, Olive, Moonstruck, Autumn Terracotta, etc.

Sick of Studio J Yet?

Are you sick of my Studio J layouts yet?  :)  I'm still furiously trying to finish up my knit Christmas gifts (only 2 projects left!) and so that hasn't left much time for paper crafting.  However, SJ is so convenient and fast, I was able to get 12 layouts done over the past week!  So I still have lots of pages to share with you.  Think I'll share 2 with you today.

This one features the Free Spirit paper packet.  I'm so glad it is still available with SJ, because it was retired this year.  These photos are from early September, when I threw Dave a surprise birthday party when he turned 30!  Look how tiny Ruby was!!!

This layout uses the Evensong paper, and photos of us decorating our tree.  (Don't worry, I fixed the title area before printing - just didn't get a copy of the page after).

Can you see what is the same with both sets of pages?  Look closely!

They both use the same Cherish Layout - but on the birthday pages I flipped the left page to the right and then rotated it 180 degrees.  Pretty snazzy!  Just one more cool thing about SJ.  You can flip and rotate the pages to whatever orientation best suits your pictures.

Studio J Again

Here is another Studio J layout!  I've been on a roll this weekend.  These photos were taken at Sammie's Christmas Pageant last week.  I used the Simple Pleasures paper pack and embellishments - one of my favorites ever.  Even though it was retired a year ago, it is still available with Studio J.  That is just another reason I love this program.

Christmas Party

Here is another Studio J layout I have to share with you.  This layout features the Sarsaparilla papers - which one doesn't normally associate with Christmas, but works well with my photos in this case.  Like yesterday's pages these took less than 30 minutes to complete!  But the most incredible thing is that these photos were taken at our party LAST NIGHT!

I love Studio J because I don't have to resize or print my photos before I can scrapbook them.  I don't have to order paper packets and embellishments and wait for them to arrive.  In just minutes, I loaded photos from last night, and whipped up an adorable page.  With SJ, I never again will be years (or even months) behind in my scrapping!  Aren't YOU excited to try it?!

A few quick notes about the photos... Dave and I hosted a Christmas party last night for our close friends.  The food was AMAZING and the company even better.  Dave made a turkey and paired it with a pomegranate gravy.  We made my famous cranberry apple stuffing too.  Our friends all brought dishes to share as well.  The highlight of the evening, however, had to be the traditional English Plum Pudding.  Dave has been working on it for weeks, and it was beyond splendid.  We even lit it on fire before serving it!  You can just barely see the blue flame in the photo.  It was such a fun night - and we are excited to make this party an annual tradition.

Studio J Preview

Close To My Heart will be introducing "Studio J" in just a few short months, and I can't wait to show it off to all of my customers!  I was fortunate to have been given early access to Studio J, and have been using it for a few weeks now.  I love it!

For those that don't know, Studio J is an online scrapbooking studio.  It's like digi-scrapping, but not nearly as time consuming or difficult to use.  Best of all - you don't need to purchase or load any expensive software on your computer to use it.  Once it comes out to the public in March, all you need is an internet connection and my CTMH website to try the COMPLETE version of Studio J.  The only time you pay is when you are ready to have your pages printed and shipped to you!  Another great thing about Studio J is that you purchase pages - not bound books - so you can slip your layouts into existing albums and mix and match studio style with classic scrapbook layouts.

To make a Studio J layout, you load your pictures, and then select one of over 40 wonderful patterns from Imagine or Cherish.  Next you pick one of dozens of exclusive CTMH paper packs.  Then just drag and drop your photos (which can be resized, and even made black and white, or sepia!).  Finally, add optional embellishments to your 2 page layout.  Select from stickers, ribbons, brads, metal accents and even paper distressing!  With Studio J, you don't have to be super tech savvy.  With just a few clicks of a mouse anyone can make a gorgeous layout.  Even my husband has made a few!

Today I'm giving you all a sneak peek at one of my layouts I created using Studio J!  I used the "Dramatic Fashion" layout with the Aspen papers.  This layout only took 30 minutes from start to finish - AND I was holding baby Ruby on my lap the whole time.  You can't do that when scrapping a classic layout.  In the coming weeks, you'll see more Studio J layouts from me!  I hope that once it is available you'll check it out!

ps... ignore the arrows at the top and sides of the photo.  Those will not print on the pages.

Reindeer Games

We took the girls to get their Santa pictures (in their matching Christmas dresses!) a few weeks ago.  We had heard some good things about a local Nursery in our area that had a great Santa, and reindeer for the kids to pose with, and a camel!

When we got to the nursery, we discovered the Santa did not have a real beard (pet peeve of mine), the camel was sleeping, and the photos would take over a week before they could be picked up.  I needed the photos that same day for a scrapbook project I was working on, so we decided to head over to the mall instead.

Before we left, however, we did get some cute pictures of the girls meeting Blitzen.  This was the best shot, and it may be our Christmas Card photo - assuming I get around to making cards this year!  Sammie was being so protective and loving of her sister.  She was holding her and whispering sweet things to her while we took the photos.  I'm so proud of my girls - and thankful to the Lord for blessing Dave and me with such great kids!

Dirt and Worms

I've lately been trying to do more fun projects with Sammie.  Though she hasn't shown any signs of jealousy with her baby sister, I can imagine it is difficult to adjust to not being an only child anymore.  So Dave and I have both tried to make an effort to do special things with Sam.

November 30th was once again Sam's snack day at preschool.  The last time we brought snack, we made silly smiling faces with apples, peanut butter and marshmallows.  We got the idea out of a magazine, and it was right around Halloween, so it was a huge hit with the kids.  (Here's a little peek at how they turned out...)

Well after the last snack we couldn't get away with just cheese sticks and fruit.  No way!  That's when I remembered a childhood favorite of mine - dirt and worms!  Of course after I described it to Sammie she was completely on board.

Here are our dirt and worms ingredients.  Normally I'm not a proponent of sugary snacks for the preschool class, but these were my one exception.  (And I did my best to make them slightly healthier with low fat Oreos, and fat free/sugar free pudding).

First we mixed green food coloring into the coconut to make it look like grass.  Then we mixed up the pudding, and crushed the oreos.  I had Sammie hold two gummy worms in place while I poured in the "dirt" (layers of pudding crushed oreos) into clear cups.  Then we topped the cups with coconut "grass" and let the worms flop over the edge of the cups.

Sammie said all the kids in her class loved them - and even the teachers ate snack that day! She even said she wanted them again for her birthday party.  (LOL - along with pumpkin pie, doughnuts, cupcakes, peanut brittle, and m&ms.  I told her she would only get to pick one dessert!)

Now to just think up what we'll bring for snack in January.  How do we top dirt and worms?!?!  Is it even possible?

Fairy Anya

I watched a fun tutorial the other day on shading hair like the pros using copic markers.  I'm not even CLOSE to that, but I had fun practicing the techniques from the video on this Fairy Anya.

I also used some new papers from the Spring 2010 CTMH Idea Book called Veranda.  I absolutely *LOVE* this paper pack.  I've already gone through a full pack and the new book doesn't even come out until January 1.  Just one more reason it's awesome being a consultant!

The "have a fairy happy birthday" stamp is from Stamping Bella and is one of their sentiments.

Wearing My Knitting

One of my goals for 2009 was to wear my knitting more often.  I mean, if I'm going to spend the money buying yarn, and spend time knitting, I should be wearing my creations, RIGHT?!?

Not sure if this is what I had in mind.  Hehe.

In all seriousness, aren't these little mitten ornaments ADORABLE?  I found the pattern on ravelry and am in love.  Each mitten only took about 20 minutes to knit up (in the round on double points with sock yarn scrap).

Last year my knitting buddy Deb made me miniature socks ornaments for my tree, so when I found this pattern, I knew I had to make a set for her.  :)  Once the rest of my Christmas knitting is done, I'm making a few pair for MY tree!  (Here is how they look hanging up.)

ps... Sorry - these aren't available for sale right now.  I'm up to my eyeballs in knitting projects that need completion before Christmas.  Thanks for understanding!

Christmas is coming!

Pardon my absence of late.  With craft fairs and Christmas events upon us, I have been one busy little bee!  And it's looking like the chaos will continue through Dec 25th.

I would like to share a little knitting project with you, however!  I've dived headfirst into the deep end of the sock knitting pool, and I found the most awesome sock pattern book ever!  It is "Knitted Socks East and West", by Judy Sumner (photo of the cover below).  I've already knit three patters from the book and they all turned out great!

Here is a photo of a pair of socks in progress.  I've actually completed the pair now, but will have to wait to show you that until after Christmas.  :)  Many family members read my blog, so I don't want to give too much away.  I used a wonderful yarn by Indigo Moon, which is a company in Canada.  They only sell their yarn in one store in the US - Twisted, in Portland, OR.  I was in Portland last month for a CTMH conference and discovered this shop and yarn.  Oooh boy was I in heaven!  You can also buy Indigo Moon from their website.  I have both Twisted and Indigo Moon's blogs/websites to the left in my sidebar.

Happy Christmas Prepping everyone!  I still have about 13 projects to finish by Christmas!
